The 10 Commandments in the Bible
The 10 commandments, which are the cornerstones of God’s law, are still relevant and valid today. They form the basis of what God expects of people in order to enter into eternal life.
But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. (Matthew 19:17-21, KJV)
The 10 commandments are in Exodus 20 in the Bible. Here you can find them listed in full and without abbreviations, just as they are written in the Bible.
1. The first of the 10 Commandments
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3, KJV)
2. The second of the Ten Commandments
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:4-6, KJV)
3. The third of the 10 Commandments
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Exodus 20:7, KJV)
4. The fourth of the Ten Commandments
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11, KJV)
5. The fifth of the 10 Commandments
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. (Exodus 20:12, KJV)
6. The sixth of the Ten Commandments
Thou shalt not kill. (Exodus 20:13, KJV)
7. The seventh of the 10 Commandments
Thou shalt not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14, KJV)
8. The eighth of the Ten Commandments
Thou shalt not steal. (Exodus 20:15, KJV)
9. The ninth of the 10 Commandments
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (Exodus 20:16, KJV)
10. The tenth of the Ten Commandments
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. (Exodus 20:17, KJV)
It is God’s will that we keep His commandments, and the Bible even says that we show our love for God by keeping them.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:3, KJV)
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. (2 John 1:6, KJV)
